Andrew Grove: How to Create Jobs [View article]
I tried to touch on your point in the next to last paragraph:
<<Americans as individuals are not hungry enough to hone the skills necessary to compete with Asians on a cost and productivity basis. Until Americans get hungry enough, Asians will keep eating their lunch.>>
You add the context of "professional pride". I did not mention this and it is a good point. Pride in one's work product can be an important element in productivity.

Good points.
Incidentally, the Foxconn suicides were committed by workers jumping from buildings.

I started pretty much where you are. Then I dug deeper and went into a different place. It seems that many U.S. companies incur investment expense for jobs that don't end up in the U.S. If every investment dollar produces five jobs overseas for every job in the U.S. today, then the ratio returns pretty much to the ratio of 40 years ago.
Then I found that the cost of a technology job produced by a Chinese company in China is not that much different than for a U.S. company producing a job in the U.S..
That brought me down to the bottom line of actual labor costs. That is where I should have suspected I'd be when I first saw the Grove article, but I had to fight through quite a bit to get there.
I think Grove is not way off base. I do think that he missed some critical "nuts and bolts".
